I Give You Glassware

       Dear T,
Bought a cut-glass pitcher for us today at the thrift store. Six dollars! Thought it would make us feel a little elegant, with the light streaming through, reflecting off our turquoise table. No bottom-feeders living here!

I imagined our fresh-brewed iced-tea or sparkly lemonade pouring from the spout. I swear I heard the ice clinking against the inside, heard us laughing about the dirty lyrics to your music, taking turns, turning the handle for refills.

I brought the pitcher home, started to wash it in hot, hot, sudsy water. Then I saw it! The giant chip out of the spout, with a crack echoing on down. How could I have missed that, T? Did I want the bargain so bad, that I made believe it was part of the ruffled rim? Did I just look the other way and pretend not to notice? Well, I guess it wouldn't be the first time that I did that.

I know it was silly to think that I could lift our spirits with a second-hand pitcher. But, I tried; I'll keep on trying. For you T, always for you.

          Love,
          Mom

  1. Oh no! You'll just have to put dried flowers in it.

  2. oh dear...the chip on the spout could be ground but the crack...not so much....But I confess...the same has happened to me at thrift stores...I have a similar divided candy dish...cut glass..old...I couldn't believe that they mis-marked it....they didn't..But I fooled them....I took my knife sharpening rod and worked on that large chip and it is now usable and quite beautiful....You are right to want to surround yourself in pretty things for everyday...for this everyday is a day of our life that we will not be able to live again or over....good for you Wrinks
keep looking....put some silicone caulk on the crack and try grinding the spout..to use a flower vase....or just to sit on the shelf and catch the light

    3. Sorry... You wont believe this but yesterday at work, some guy was looking for a file and burst into my "cubby" saying, "Princess, where are the faxes from yesterday?" I swear it. It was all I could do, to keep from turning on him and bellowing in my most possessed and raging Ursala the sea witch voice, DID YOU REALLY JUST CALL ME PRINCESS? But I need the job and they know me as being so mild mannered, I think the shock would have been too much for him.

  4. I glued a piece onto a beloved teapot and used it for years. Maybe...

    1. I will drag out the metal file, I will glue a piece to fill in -whatever it takes, this pitcher will return to some semblance of grandeur!
